On November 9, 2011, volunteers of Help Actually visited Mr. Chow, who asked for help through Help Actually’s hotline, and learned about his past accident, his current situation and needs. Mr. Chow is now almost 40 years old, and at the time of the accident, he was only 28 years old.
At that time, he was engaged in construction work on a slope, but because of rainy conditions, he fell from the slope and was seriously injured. Upon, Mr. Chow needed to have his left leg amputated in order to survive. After the accident, he felt hopeless, helpless, and lost his spirit and confidence. He even gave up on his once enthusiastic passion for sports, and his temper became agitated and troubled. Later on, after adjusting to a prosthetic leg and learning to adapt to a new life, he slowly accepted reality throughout the years and became more optimistic towards life and once again found his passion for sports. He also volunteered in churches and used his own life story to encourage others.
However, Mr. Chow recently visited the doctor and learned that his prosthetic leg has almost reached its useful life and will be unusable soon, which made him very worried. As a church volunteer, it is financially impossible for Mr. Chow to afford for a new prosthetic leg, and his nearly deteriorated prosthetic leg has been causing inability for him to move around, which made daily life and typical tasks difficult for Mr. Chow to handle. He further worried that he will not be able to be a volunteer anymore and further plunged into depression and began feeling pessimistic about life again. After understanding Mr. Chow’s living conditions, psychological state, and financial position, Help Actually will donate a new, highly advanced prosthetic leg to Mr. Chow through the Help Actually Foundation Fund and will help him pay for all medical costs, hoping that he will regain confidence and face life positively. Help Actually also hopes that he will continue his volunteer work and utilize his own life to encourage other people.
