Street Promotion of 8-12 day free consultation for the injured

Help Actually is going to have a free consultation day for the injured on Wednesday, 12 August 2009. It will be held on the Mei Foo Sun Chuen, Kowloon. You’re welcome to contact Help Actually for any information or reservation. Miss Zhang Fengyi, Director-General of "Friends of Accidents", distribute publicity leaflets on this free consultation day to the public today with Help Actually volunteers at Mei Foo Sun Chuen and hope that more injured people can come and join the consultation on 12 August.

Help Actually fights for the rights of South Asian workers

The incident of a Pakistani girl who lost her life in an industrial accident earlier revealed that some factories which only sought productivity and ignored the safety, still used child labor illegally. Help Actually and Mr Mohammad Aslam (The Chairman of Hong Kong Community Development Network Ethnic Minorities Youth League) submitted a petition letter to the Safety Promotion Division of The Labour Department at Central. The letter aims for asking the follow-up of the mentioned problems and the attention of the rights of those South Asian workers so as to prevent such unfair and illegal things from happening again in the future.

“Help Actually" seek accessibility for visually impaired persons

Successfully supported by more than 400 signatures from the public. There are now more than 120,000 visually impaired people in Hong Kong, including public housing tenants and others who could use the shopping malls under their jurisdiction. The Housing Authority, which had almost adopted $100 million in 2005 to set up some visually impaired assistance facilities in all public housing estates in Hong Kong. But the works did not include the collection and exchange shopping malls in the various housing estates, and the facilities for the visually impaired in the shopping malls under the Administration of Foreign Exchange are still seriously inadequate and pose a number of obstacles to the visually impaired. It even poses a potential risk to their personal safety. Therefore, the "Friends of Accidents" together with the Caring for Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Association of the Blind people have launched a signature campaign to actively promote the construction of additional diversion facilities for the visually impaired in their shopping malls, including lead paths and prompting noises, to support "accessible channels" to reduce and avoid accidents.

Help Actually visited accident victims: Appeal to the Government with the Association for the blind

On March 13, 2009, our volunteers visited Mr. Li, visually impaired, who accidentally fell down from a platform Kowloon Bay MTR station. During the visit, we learned more about how the accident happened and the state of Mr Li’s injury. We also explained to him in what way he could claim his rights. After the visit, Help Actually volunteers followed up Mr Li’s case and provided assistance of necessary. Mr Li, 48-year-old, was a masseur. When he was at a younger age, he had glaucoma which led to a loss of 90% of eyesight. The accident happened around 1 pm on March 4, 2009. Mr. Li was to get off the train and change to another line. Due to his weak eyesight, Mr Li could only get directions with a walking stick. Mr Li was trying to find the elevator after he got off the train, however, he didn’t get any help from working staff at the station. In addition of that, there are no screen doors at the station, so that Mr Li took a wrong way and unfortunately fell down to the railway. Thankfully, there were no trains pulling into the platforms at that moment, and luckily two by-standers pulled him away. Mr Li only hurt his muscles and slightly injured. And after checking up in the hospital, he wasn’t suffering from too much impact.

The number of accidents caused by drunk driving has also risen sharply in recent months, which has gradually attracted attention from all walks of life. According to the statistics of the Police General Area, the number of traffic accident casualties in 2008 was 18,313. While the Labour Department's statistics also show that the number of occupational casualties in 2007 was 43,979. Moreover, the estimated number of occupational casualties in 2008 was not less than 40,000. However, there are very few institutions in the community that can provide assistance to the injured and their families affected by the accident and with the inability to cope with such a large number of cases. It is noted that The Friends of Accidents was officially registered as a non-profit-making organization accredited in Hong Kong on 9 December 2008 to help the injured and their families understand the life changes they face after accidents, the difficulties of their jobs, employment arrangements, medical care and the law.
