Donating an electric wheelchair to Mr. So, an accident survivor with brainstem paralysis
Mr. So, now 29 years old, saw his life transformed by a severe traffic accident in 2006. While accidentally crossing the road, he was struck by a taxi, resulting in multiple bone fractures, severe head trauma, and a sunken left/right skull that led to brainstem paralysis. Following a prolonged coma and multiple life-saving surgeries, the severe head trauma deprived him of mobility and impaired his speech. Now entirely dependent on his elderly parents and restricted to a wheelchair, the once-optimistic and active young man became withdrawn and introverted, feeling hopeless and despondent about life.
Help Actually visited Mr. So and his family in March and May 2012. After assessing his physical and psychological condition and needs, the organization arranged for him to receive electric wheelchair operation training at Hong Kong Baptist Hospital and allocated funds to donate a lightweight electric wheelchair. This initiative aimed to encourage Mr. So to regain self-confidence, actively engage in his rehabilitation therapy, and enhance his physical mobility through slight limb control. Mr. So expressed that with the support of Help Actually, he is once again filled with hope for the future. He aspires to one day stand and walk on his own, lighten his parents’ burden, move about and work independently, and volunteer in his spare time to help others—using his own life story to inspire those around him.
Donation of a Prosthetic Limb to Accident Victim Mr. Chow
Mr. Chow, now in his forties, lost his left leg in a severe industrial accident over a decade ago. The tragic incident initially left him in absolute despair. However, after being fitted with a prosthetic limb that restored his ability to walk, he successfully rebuilt his life and eventually embraced a positive, proactive outlook.
Unfortunately, when his prosthetic limb completely wore out over time, Mr. Chow fell into a deep depression, once again feeling defeated and discouraged by his circumstances.
After conducting a comprehensive assessment of Mr. Chow’s living conditions, psychological well-being, and financial situation, Help Actually stepped in to support him. We allocated financial aid from the Help Actually Victim Assistance Fund to purchase a brand-new, high-performance prosthetic limb for Mr. Chow, fully covering the device and all associated medical fitting expenses.
By providing this new prosthetic, we hope to empower Mr. Chow to regain his self-confidence and positive attitude towards life. We look forward to seeing him continue his dedicated volunteer work at his church, using his remarkable resilience and life story to inspire and encourage others.
Donating a Wheelchair to Madam Chung, an Elderly Accident Survivor
Years ago, Madam Chung suffered a broken leg in an accident, and a few years later, she fractured her lower back from a fall. These two consecutive accidents dealt severe physical and psychological blows to her, leaving her not only with chronic mobility difficulties but also stripped of her confidence to interact with others, resulting in near-total social isolation.
Recognizing her plight, the Help Actually Victim Assistance Fund allocated financial aid to provide Madam Chung with a lightweight electric wheelchair, aiming to help her rebuild her confidence in communicating with the people around her.
Help Actually hopes that this lightweight electric wheelchair will resolve her mobility challenges and significantly reduce her risk of falls. More importantly, we hope it will empower Madam Chung to actively engage and participate in community activities, meet new friends, and ultimately fill her life with greater joy, warmth, and care.
